Annuities for Florida Retirees and Pre-Retirees

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company: you give them a lump sum or series of payments, and they give you guaranteed interest, guaranteed income for life, or both. The guarantees are real. So are the surrender periods and the fees. Ricardo explains all of it.

Ricardo works with fixed annuities (a guaranteed interest rate for a set term, similar in spirit to a CD but issued by an insurer) and fixed-indexed annuities (interest credited based on an index with a floor and a cap, plus optional income riders). He does not sell variable annuities through this practice.

Annuities are suitable for some people and unsuitable for others. They're generally long-term products with surrender charges if you withdraw early. They can be a strong fit for someone who wants principal protection and predictable income in retirement — and a poor fit for someone who needs liquidity or is still growing their savings.

Who this is for

  • Pre-retirees looking to protect a portion of savings from market losses
  • Retirees who want a guaranteed income they can't outlive
  • People rolling over a 401(k) or IRA who want a conservative option for part of it
  • Anyone who wants the guarantees explained in plain language before they sign

What this coverage typically addresses

Fixed annuity (MYGA)

A guaranteed interest rate for a set number of years. Simple and predictable.

Fixed-indexed annuity

Interest credited based on an index with a 0% floor and a cap or participation rate. Principal is protected from market loss; growth is limited.

Income riders

Optional riders that guarantee a lifetime income amount, usually for an annual fee.

Tax deferral

Interest grows tax-deferred until withdrawn. Withdrawals before 59½ may be subject to a penalty.

Beneficiary provisions

Remaining value can pass to beneficiaries, depending on contract design.

What Ricardo will ask you for

Have these ready and the quote goes smoother. Don't have everything? Call anyway — Ricardo will tell you what actually matters for your situation.

  • Your age and when you plan to need the money
  • The source of funds (savings, IRA/401(k) rollover, CD maturity)
  • How much liquidity you need to keep outside the annuity
  • Your goal: guaranteed growth, guaranteed income, or principal protection
  • Existing retirement income (Social Security, pension)

Suitability first. Always.

Florida requires that an annuity recommendation be suitable for the client — and Ricardo treats that as the actual standard, not a form to sign. He'll ask about your full picture, tell you how much of your savings should never go into an annuity, and explain the surrender schedule before you see a rate.

Annuity conversations are scheduled directly with Ricardo so there's time to go through the contract properly.

Common questions

Are annuities safe?

Fixed and fixed-indexed annuities are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company and, in Florida, by the state guaranty association up to statutory limits. They are not FDIC-insured.

What is a surrender charge?

A penalty for withdrawing more than the free-withdrawal amount during the surrender period (often 5–10 years). This is why annuities are long-term products.

Can I lose money in a fixed-indexed annuity?

Principal is protected from index losses. However, rider fees and early surrender charges can reduce your value, and credited interest may be low in flat markets.

Should I put all my savings in an annuity?

No. Ricardo will tell you the same thing. Annuities should be one piece of a plan, with liquid savings kept outside.

Is this available in Spanish?

Yes, including a full review of the contract in Spanish.

Coverage availability, eligibility and pricing vary by carrier and are subject to underwriting. Nothing on this page guarantees a premium, savings, approval or coverage. Annuities are long-term contracts issued by insurance companies and are subject to surrender charges, fees and contract terms. Guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Fixed-indexed annuities are not investments in the stock market; interest is subject to caps and participation rates that may change. Withdrawals before age 59½ may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty.
